March Of The Raptors Album Review

March Of The Raptors

Words by Brendan Monteiro

Think of all the things you love about hardcore, mince them together and then re-think what kind of a record you would end up with if you had to fuse all of those aspects together. This is the feeling I get With March Of The Raptors self titled debut album, the London mob throw a fresh spin while at the same time reminding me exactly what I like about hardcore. I can’t help but think of some of my favourite bands while listening to this album yet at the same time it never sounds rehashed. Having already set the stage as an underground supergroup of sorts, combining previous members from The Devil Sold His Soul, Fireapple Red and Smoking Hearts, it’s no wonder that MOTR are a name that you will be seeing a lot more of in the future.

The album sears into action with Perish In Flames, it’s fast paced gritty antics reminiscent of 1000 Hertz but with a bit of thrash thrown in for good measure. Their sound is pushed forward vocally by Jamie Searle, previously from Adequate Seven, he juggles between the swagger of Matt Caughthran (The Bronx) and the brashness of Tom Lacey (TGOAT). Grace Of God is my favourite on the album, it hints a bit of a Cancer Bats feel to it and then just as your about to get cheeky and call it on that, the song cranks back with a bit of a Comeback Kid feel. If all these bands aren’t enough for you there also is a fair amount of technicality that to me is comparable to the likes of A Wilhelm Scream.

This album is one that is going to turn a few heads for sure, the songs are of a high quality but never once let go of that gritty raw tone that hardcore thrives in. It’s delivered in the good old fashioned way with a hint of something new and exciting, sort of like a kick in the kidneys.
