Porcupine Tree DVD review

Porcupine Tree – Anesthetize -Live In Tilburg – Oct 2008

Words by Eric Cannon

Porcupine Tree deliver an amazing live show and what better way to capture that then with the help of Lasse Hoile. It’s not the first time that Porcupine Tree have brought in Hoile to work with them, having already directed Blackfield Live in NY DVD and the music video for Blackfield and Time Flies as well as creating artwork for some of their releases. What Hoile does is really capture the essence of Porcupine Tree and I can understand why they keep going back to him. His visual ideas gel effortlessly with their sound, his usage of vintage and modern techniques blends so well with their prog sound. As far a visual’s go, Porcupine Tree are on top of their game and the lights and and video screens create a spellbinding effect. Hoile does a great job of not only giving you a feel from the crowds perspective but also from the bands and as much as this is a treat for Porcupine Tree lovers. I am certain it is as much for the band members themselves, with sneak peaks into the backstage areas as memento’s to the evening. His camera angles give you enough perspective to see every detail of the show, especially interesting around Gavin Harrison’s drums section during Anesthetize where his flips through different angles and drums to accompany the drumming.

There are some parts to the set were Porcupine Tree just geek out on some amazing prog moments which to devout fans will be unbeleiveble but might be lost in the DVD form. Hoile does an amazing job capturing their energy and atmosphere but to truly feel what Porcupine Tree are like go out and watch them for yourself, but buy the DVD to fill the gaps between their next tour.
