Introducing Sabatta

Words by Michael Dickinson

We’ve never had it so good! With this wonder thing called the inter-web they seems to be a plethora of new music out there. Unsigned bands and artists all vying for our attention. Sometimes it’s difficult to wade through the reeds of creativity. There are a lot of good bands performing right now but I have found no one who I took an instant liking to as instantly as I have done with Sabatta.

Formed in South London in 2005 Yinka (vocals, guitar), Hugo (bass) and, depending what webpage your read, Oli/Matt/John Doe (drums) make up this formidable, dare I say righteous, line-up. They state some of their influences as Zeppelin, Motorhead, Metallica, Hendrix. Whilst you can hear all these bands in their music it never feels like “been there done that”. Instead Sabatta have taken these rock staples and created something fresh and wonderful. This is perfect music for driving around in the beautiful sunshine, windows down, pork-pie hats on and a crate of beer in the backseat – covered with a sheet of course! The music just makes you want to move, whether it’s stamping your feet or taking a ride in a car the music moves you, physically. In this regard they are not unlike Spy Catcher. Some tracks like “The Emperor’s New Clothes” sound like early Korn mixed with a Bad Seeds bass line, others such as “Exit Right” are what would happen if Josh Homme fell into the Funkatronic 3000 machine*. Ever wondered what Jimi Hendrix would have sounded like fronting Motorhead? You have! Just check out their version of “Ace of Spades”
If it’s the music that brings you in from the cold, it’s the lyrics that will make you stay for whiskey. Several even. These are world-weary sounding men who talk about a world that you and I live in. From the drunken night out to the botched up relationship, by way of the good old fashioned rock out Sabatta are on the same relatable level as The King Blues or Frank Turner.
Yinka’s vocals are most commonly equated with Lenny Kravitz, but in their also are flourishes of Chris Cornell and occasionally Seal (depending on your feelings toward Seal you could see this as insult, I for one think he’s a fine singer!). His higher register is the bands biggest surprise. Musically the group is hard and driven but Yinka’s voice seems to be on another level. He is also a great talent on lead guitar. Hugo’s bass line is a hard and dirty, just the way I like it. You nod your head whether you want to or not. It’s an old school post-punk sound that few bands do well these days. Tying these elements together is John Doe’s pulsating drum lines. Whilst the bass makes you tap your foot the drums make you want to rock out in the most extreme terms.

So to put this in perspective; if you like Motorhead, Jimi Hendrix, Spy Catcher, Queens of the Stone Age, Lenny Kravitz, Korn, Audioslave, Metallica, The King Blues, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Black Sabbath, Megadeath or Frank Turner, you would be some kind of jezebel… no that’s a bit harsh… fool to miss out on Sabatta. Catch whenever you can next, I will be. We’ve never had it so good!

Check out their albums “Princess Raw” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes”
*Patent pending.

Introducing 8th Time Luckie

Words by Ian Dickinson

I am known for being a bit of miserable, misanthropic git. I am aware of this. I even embrace it to a certain extent. For the most part, Pop-Punk and I don’t get along all that well (besides Four Year Strong & Attack! Attack!). It just too bright, cheerful and bouncy for my morose taste buds. But on a sunny spring morning, after the drudgery of winter has almost blackened my soul entirely, 8th Time Luckie have managed to permeate my mardy shell. Surprisingly I have found myself, not hating it, but actually enjoying it!

8TL are young, ambitious and hard working. Formed in the summer of 2008 in London the band is driven by James (vocals & guitar), Anthony (Drums) and Jordan (Bass). They have already managed to play alongside, such notable Pop-Punks acts as You Me At Six, WeAreTheOcean, and the aforementioned Attack! Attack!

8TL are a Pop-Punk band that stays true to the essence of the genre. The songs are fast paced and punk fuelled with a romantic and personal lyrical content that anyone at some point in their life’s can relate to (however many years ago it was now). What has surprised me the most about 8TL was James’s vocal style. Rather than the usual nasal whining I despise from similar acts. James has a strong, low and resonating voice that gives the music and especially the lyrics a maturity and power that can be found wanting in the music of their peers.

I played 8TL debut release Please Turn Over in my office and within 2minutes I could hear people humming and taping away as if they had known the tracks for months. The real standout tracks are Diligent At Being A Disaster, which 8TL play harder and faster than any of the other tracks. Paper Notes is the perfect song to conclude Please Turn Over. It is a shockingly well written and accomplished ballad that includes a fantastic guitar solo giving it a grandiose stadium feel that is unusual for a band of this ilk.

If you are a fan of Pop-Punk and the bands mentioned so far I can recommend that you check out 8TL right now. As Yazz once prophetically sang; “the only way is up” and I think that is true of these lads. 8TL certainly have drive and the potential to become serious players in the Pop-Punk world. So as Spring is here and the Summer is fast approaching 8TL’s upbeat, Pop-Punk riffs and hooks are perfect for some beers, friends and burnt BBQ food in the back garden.

Starseed release ‘Shine’ video and tour dates

Anthemic rockers Starseed are set to release the ‘SHINE’ single on Feb 22 2010. Taken from the ‘Peace Machine’ album it is a mammoth gut punch of a track, serving up a compelling mixture of mega riffing and infectious melody.

Their debut album, ‘Peace Machine’ (released in late 2009), has already proved to be both a critical and commercial success, prompting XFM to reel the band in for a session as well as gaining the attention of UK festivals organisers for 2010.
With a sound that takes in the epic, melodic rock tendencies of the resurgent grunge scene (Pearl Jam to Alice In Chains) all the way through to the intelligent aggression and energy of hard rock stalwarts like Cancer Bats, Soil and Alexisonfire, Starseed offer up a sound as dynamically post-millennial as you could wish for.

This UK based, but South African born, quintet are fired up and ready for an intense 2010.
‘We can’t wait,’ exhorts frontman Russell Spence. ‘Last year was just amazing for us, and we are primed and ready for an incredible start to this new decade’.
TOUR DATES BELOW:

The band will undertake a UK tour to coincide with the release of the ‘Shine’ single. Catch the band at the following shows:

25 Feb – Scream Lounge, Croydon (**Venue Changed from Black Sheep Bar**)

27 Feb – Champions, Bournemouth

03 March – Bannermans, Edinburgh

04 March – Rockers, Glasgow

Introducing Hopeless Heroic

Words by Ian Dickinson

Genre killers Hopeless Heroic (HH) have one hell of a past and more importantly they have one hell of a future a head of them. HH are a distinctive and formidable new force on the music landscape with their combination of Punk, Metal, classical violin and a melodious Hip Hop flow, but let’s start things off with a true story of epic and almost unbelievable magnitude.

Gavin Bain (Vocals) and his friend decided that they were destined to become world famous Hip Hop stars. The only problem being that they were just two lads from Scotland. Scotland is not famous for its commercial Hip Hop scene and the pair found it difficult to get noticed. The duo known as Silibil N’ Brains, adopted American accents, at first only as a means to get their foot in the door, well they went through that door like Jack Nicholson in the Shining and before they knew it, their pseudo American alter egos saw them signed to Sony, touring with D-12 and hanging out with A-list celebrities. The pressure of the hoax became too much for the pair and luckily for us all things fell apart. If they didn’t maybe there would be no HH and that would be a tearful shame.

Hollywood blockbuster swindles and corporate cuckolding aside, it is time for the really important stuff; HH’s music. HH are a London based quintet which was conceived in January 2007 when Bain met Grant Magnus (Guitar). The pair was joined by classically trained violinist Tony Sabberton (Violin) and a hard rocking; violin brandishing, Hip Hop beast was born. The band is completed by Rob Bayley (Bass) and most recently Dai Knight (Drums) who make a formidable rhythm section that effortlessly drive the numerous styles of the band at a thunderous pace. Knight spoke exclusively to Clink about his feelings on joining the band; “It’s wicked being able to be ridiculously creative all the time, coming up with new ideas and interesting sounds with four stupidly talented musicians who all want to make music we love.”

The band released a five track EP titled Mechanical Lions on their own label in November 2009. I only have one problem with the EP. I want more. Five tracks does not get the monkey off my back. As soon as the last track, Biting Nails And Watching Clocks concludes the haunting tale of a broken man that commits heinous and violent crimes the repeat button is instantly slapped.

The opening track Mechanical Lions demonstrates HH amalgamation of styles magnificently. Bain effortlessly glides from a Hip Hop style that is reminiscent of the smooth style of 90’s classics Souls Of Mischief and The Pharcyde into powerful melodies and intimidating screams. Magnus’ mighty and magnificent riff in Guinea Pig Syndrome is sleazy and infectious. It has been wedged in my head since I first heard it along with Bain’s lyric; “we are puppeteers of discontent.” Sabberton wields his violin with a Shinobi precision garnishing the band with a grandiose, Danny Elfman’esque sound that faultlessly compliments Bain’s lyrics. The violin has an eerie charm that creates a sinister atmosphere through out. The pace of the notes played keeps the whole affair rocking fast. What appeals to me about the violin is the emotion and mood it creates.

As well as the violin, what really stands out and appeals to me about HH are the lyrics. It is the songs narrative that I find captivating. It is refreshing for song lyrics to have purpose and structure rather than just a random combination of sentiments. There is a precision and care taken in each song to tell a story in the manner that it truly deserves. The lyrics are evocative and lucid. I am sure Nick Cave or Nas would be proud to have written such violent, vengeful and touching tracks as Mechanical Lions, You Got What You Deserved and Biting Nails And Watching Clocks.

According to Knight, the band are currently recording their debut full length Become The Monster. Knight claims that he “can’t wait to tour its release in April. We have a mental time on the road and get some funny ass stories out of it!” This is not rock rap. Do not be fooled or allow yourself to be duped by misconceptions and stereotypes. This is the evolution; a hybrid. Very few acts posses a genuinely original sound but HH have achieved this. I can only look forward to the upcoming full length and a tour.

Starseed

Words and photograph by Marcus Maschwitz

starseed-introducing

Starseed has been around and playing since 2000 so it may seem inappropriate for me to do an introducing piece on them after such a long time but I feel that this is the year that they will basically be forgotten (in a sense) for everything that they might have done in the past and almost reborn into a completely new level as a band. Don’t get me wrong, they have done amazingly up until now but I have been listening to their new album, Peace Machine (their 2nd full length album launching on the 7th August 2009 at IndigO2) for just over a month now and I still cannot get my head around it. Having worked as a photographer on MANY band promo shoots, I often wonder how many of them will make it further than the photoshoot and to be honest, a lot of them break up / split while they are still recording and the photographs never ever get to be seen. Anyway, this isn’t about me but I wanted to just make the point because I worked with these guys and as always I take the time out to give them a listen and give my honest opinions on what I think, obviously hoping that they all do well if they are cool. This bunch is super cool and I remember taking their album home to give it a listen, not really expecting much, and then being gobsmacked as soon as I hit play on my stereo. The first thing that shot through my mind was the HUGENESS of it. The first song made it clear that everyone involved had done their homework and put in many hours to get it exactly how they had dreamed it to be, quite possibly even bigger. I cannot wait for this album to be available to the rest of the world so everyone else can experience this feeling.

The band has had a few member changes over the years but is now settled on Russell Spence, Gerald Gill, Dale Anderson, Peter Wicker and Andrew Spence who couldn’t be matched any better. I spent a day with them and the bond that they have is a strong one of friendship as well as drive that they all share for this musical project. I always enjoy when people do something with passion but remember the reason why they are doing it so that the enjoyment stays a big part of it all. Their influences and inspirations are similar although broad ranging with bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Chevelle, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion and Billy Talent to name a few but I think they have a product that is unique in several ways. Although their new album is the one that is going to push them forward, a lot needs to be said about their live show as it is something to be excited about on it’s own. They are tight, they are focused, they are powerful, they are intense, they are personal and they make sure to give the best show that they can regardless of the venue size or the amount of people in the crowd. Russell’s vocals are incredibly strong and the melodies that the band has come up with just seem too good to be true.

In my personal opinion, Starseed are heading to become one of the biggest heavy rock bands that the UK has given birth to and the world needs to look out for them. I do not understand how they are not yet signed but I feel that this will change shortly after their album drops. I look forward to watching their growth as I feel it is only just starting.

Check them out if you haven’t and keep the 7th August 2009 in mind and join them as they launch one of the most exciting albums this year. Without doubt, the Clink Music Magazine team will be there but we don’t want to make up your minds for you.
