Interview with Stew Milton of Dear Superstar

Words by Brendan Monteiro

Dear Superstar is like a rock n roll sex tornado tearing up the scene, having already toured with icons Papa Roach and indulged in drinking spells with Tommy Lee what else is there left for this five piece riot machine to do. Well that is simple, world domination. Hailing from Manchester, Dear Superstar have come a long way through hard times and there definitely is a light shining bright for this young band. Their music is an energetic amalgamation of 80′s hard rock brewed with a modern bite and delivered in with a knock out punch in pure party fashion.

The band has had quite a rollercoaster start; can you take us through the early days of Dear Superstar?

Whilst the band comes from meager beginnings, the start of the band was a fuck load of fun! We literally locked ourselves away and wrote enough songs to fill a set.. We got a van and hit the road, quickly building a debauched reputation for ourselves… We’ve always been about touring and playing as many shows as we can, so would drive to the middle of nowhere and play to 10 people purely because we wanted to be on the stage.

The early days were pretty crazy and we threw everything we could down our necks – if we had kept on that path we would have self-destructed, but I’m so glad we’ve done all that coz it has made us better friends and better musicians!

At the beginning a lot of people threw the term “emo” around, does this bode well with you guys though because it seems a little obsurd, can you shed some light on your reasons?

We don’t really dislike the term, we just don’t class ourselves as that. We all hold a very eclectic love of music, and just see ourselves as a dirty rock n roll band. We try not to pigeon-hole ourselves to a genre, we just write the music we like. We’re influenced by bands like Motley Crue, Pantera and Skid Row but drag that kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

Staying on that subject, you re recording earlier material, was that an attempt to lose the emo tag?

We re-recorded older songs because the original recording were either just demo tracks or we had grown so much as musically that we believed we could add more to a song!

If people feel the need to tag us emo then tag away, its not something we care too much about. Yeah ok, we wear eye liner and black jeans, we write songs with an element of truth and elements of fiction. Anyone who has seen us live will see were just 5 guys writing filthy assed music having fun and bringing the balls to the party!

You have had your share of label problems, how do feel about your current situation with demolition?

Yeah we’ve been ripped off, put down and almost broken by labels and managers in the past… But with Demolition Records and we’re so happy with what we’ve achieved together… They are a proper UK Rock label who genuinely care for their acts.

We are in the process of writing our third album at the moment and Demolition have heard the tracks so as for a future with them we will see. All depends where we are and where they are when the album is finished. You never know what is around the corner, right now we are concentrating on touring as much as possible, we played a lot of shows last year and I want to double that tally! I’d like to think Dear Superstar is capable of playing well over 200 shows this year and still find time to finish the album.

We are stronger than we have ever been and our bond is most certainly showing no cracks or flaws! 2010 is going to be one hell of a ride!

Early this year you toured with the Roach, how was it touring with your idols and did you learn anything from them?

Touring with Papa Roach was a fucking honor. I have been a huge fan of there’s since “Infest” was released, so to share the stage and day to day life with them was an amazing experience.

We learnt a lot from them some things we probably don’t even realize we’ve learnt yet. One thing I certainly learnt was don’t be anyone but yourself, we get a lot of comparisons to Papa Roach, but we are not them – we wear our love and influences on our sleeves and play the music that turns us on… The UK and European tour with Papa Roach was really intense and we also learned that we are not invincible – Micky almost died in Bremen (Germany) but we’re like a pack of wolves, so as soon as he got out of Hospital – we dealt with it!

Jacoby and the guys know how to party, what was your most memorable moment on that tour?

That has to be the show we did with them in Copenhagen, we heard a rumor that a certain hero of everyone’s would be hitting the show that night but thought nothing of it, then when we came off stage and were sitting backstage with our post show drinks Tommy Lee walks in expecting a party! Before you knew it one of our crew appeared with a bottle of 79% proof rum…..party time!

Safe to say not many people left sober that night! To share drinks with Papa roach and Buckcherry every night was amazing, adding Tommy Lee to the mix was legendary. 3 days later when Tommy arrived at Graspop Festival (Belgium) he took one look at Micky, hugged him and made no hesitation of pointing out to everyone that it was going to go off again! And so began round 2!

How would you best describe your music to a tone deaf Kylie minogue fan?

Dear Kylie Minogue fan
Please let me introduce to your poisoned ears to the musical happenings of Dear Superstar!

Close your eyes for a second…. Now imagine a few less lights but more screaming girls, a few less musicians but more stage presence, no auto tuned vocals but more charisma than you can shake a stick at… Oh and our singer has a nicer arse! You like the sound of that? See you at the next show!

Yours Faithfully,

Stew Milton
Dear Superstar

2009 has been an incredible year for DS, any big plans for 2010 yet?

For sure, we intended to hit 2010 harder, faster, louder and bigger than ever before, we have become 100% built for the road and fully intend to spend as little time at home as possible this year. We are already about to head off on a UK Tour with our friends Heaven’s Basement then we hit Europe again, followed by More UK/Europe for festival season.

With the vision of the states and Japan not too far out of sight, we don’t want any ears to go untouched by Dear Superstar this year! So watch your backs because we are coming to a town near you!

Thank your for your time and good luck with the future

Thanks
